FX Breakdown - Jamie XX Coachella 22

2024-05-22

I watched this live stream and I remember it was a tripod'd shot of all three screen. No video switching on the live feed, but the screens on stage had some of the most creative use of video and audience engagement I've ever seen. Matched with Jamie XX's impeccable DJ set, pure bliss.

A whole sequence following a group of dancers through the crowds behind FOH where they wove gracefully in and around VIP areas. so epic, camcorder style run and gun stuff. I love this vibe so much that I pulled some footage off of a fan and want to analyze them to do a video FX recreation.

I'll always remember this set as some of the most special live video mixing to feedback the crowd energy for pure magic.

FX1 - Strobe

Rapid strobe of hard color mix.

FX2 - Glitch

Color noise with masking strobed over video.

FX3 - Pulse

Color pulsing gently in and out of a hard color mix.

FX4 - Color Strobe

Full color mix strobed between two values. Image is distorted to a psychedelic quality.

FX5 - Best Friends with LD

Beautiful stage lighting is accented by coordinating the video to capture those beautiful rays of light. Team coordination or serendipity?
